Introducing Porch Leaner Wood Kits: A New Way to Make a Porch Sign
For years, if you wanted a WallCutz porch sign, you bought a stencil. You'd sand and paint your board, tape the mylar down, offload your brush until it was nearly dry, and work the paint through the openings. It's a good method and we're not going anywhere near retiring it.
But it isn't the only way to make a porch sign, and this year we started building the other way.
Porch leaner wood kits are our newest product line. Instead of a stencil, you get a bag of laser-cut wood pieces — the letters, the shapes, the whole design cut apart. You paint each piece flat on your table, then glue them onto a board. That's the entire process.
We launched the first one in May. There are ten now, and the line is still growing.
Why We Made Them
Three things kept coming up, and the kits answer all three.
Bleeding. It's the number one frustration with stenciling, and it's the reason we say offload, offload, offload until people are sick of hearing it. A wood kit removes the problem entirely. There's no edge for paint to creep under, because there's no stencil. Paint as wet and sloppy as you like on a piece that's sitting loose on your table.
Registration. Lining up a long design down a five-foot board is the other thing that trips people up — one crooked repeat and the whole board looks off. With a kit you arrange every piece on the board before any glue comes out, slide things around until you like it, and only then commit.
Dimension. This is the part people don't expect. A stencil puts the design flat into the board. A kit puts it on top, so it catches light and throws small shadows. In person the difference is bigger than it sounds. Some pieces even hang slightly over the edge of the board, which is intentional.
The tradeoff is honest: a stencil is reusable and a kit isn't. If you're making signs to sell at craft shows, the stencil pays for itself on the fourth board. If you're making one beautiful thing for your own porch, the kit is easier and looks more expensive. How a Porch Leaner Kit Works
Four steps, start to finish, on every kit we make:
- Buy a board and paint it. Sand it smooth, base coat it, let it dry fully. The board is not included in any of these kits — you'll want a porch-style plank from Home Depot, Lowe's, or your local lumber yard, sized to match the kit you ordered.
- Paint the pieces flat. Lay them all out on your table and paint them separately. Nothing is fussy at this stage because nothing is assembled yet.
- Arrange before you glue. Set every piece on the dry board and move things around until the layout looks right.
- Glue and seal. Wood glue, weight on top while it dries, then a clear spray sealer if the sign is living outdoors.

The Winter Kits
SWEET HOLIDAY CANDY SWIRL STACK
Our newest release. A stack of oversized candy swirls with holiday lettering, polka dots and holly, cut from 1/4" and 1/8" MDF. Fits 4ft x 10", 5ft x 12", or 6ft x 12" boards. $25.95–$31.95.

Painting tip: give each snowman a slightly different scarf and hat color. Six identical faces read as a pattern; six different ones read as a crowd.

Crows perched on a pumpkin with a sunflower, leaves, and "Happy Fall" text. This one skews cheerful rather than spooky, so it goes up in early September and stays through Thanksgiving. Four board sizes. $28.95–$34.95.

TRICK OR TREAT CANDY CORN
Big block lettering plus candy corn shapes. Straight from the kit instructions: paint the letters in candy corn stripes — yellow at the bottom, orange in the middle, white at the top, banded across the whole word rather than per letter. Fits three board sizes. $28.95–$34.95.

HAUNTED HOUSE "BOO"

STACKABLE PUMPKIN FACES
Six pumpkin faces that stack up the board with a hat on top, plus trick-or-treat letters. The clever part is the wooden spacer dots included in the kit: glue them behind the faces and you've got a gap to run mini lights through, so the whole sign lights up after dark. Sized for a 4ft x 10" board. $25.95.

The Summer and Patriotic Kits
HELLO SUNSHINE SUNFLOWER
Three layered sunflower blooms on four-piece stems, with leaves, two bumblebees, and "Hello Sunshine" lettering. Each flower has top petal pieces that glue over the base bloom for a layered look. Fits 4ft x 10" or 5ft x 12" boards. $29.95–$35.95.

USA WOOD LETTERS
The simplest kit in the line and the most flexible. Three letters, each cut in two layers, with stars and stripes cut into the top layer. Add ribbon or greenery and it's done. Letter heights of 8", 10", or 12". $15.95–$21.95.
Because it's just three letters, it's the easiest one to combine with something else on the board — paint a pattern first and lay the letters over it.
The Year-Round Kit
SEASONAL SHAPES WITH WELCOME LETTERS
This one came before the porch kit line and it's still the smartest thing we make for a porch you don't want to redo every eight weeks. You get WELCOME letters plus twelve seasonal shapes, and you swap the shape standing in for the "O" as the seasons change. Attach them with magnets, velcro, or a small nail and the swap takes about thirty seconds.
A stencil guide is included to line the letters up. Sized for 2ft through 5ft boards, in one or both shape sets. $22.95–$69.95. If you like the swap-it-out approach, our interchangeable wood kits do the same thing at shelf scale.
Along with Stackable Pumpkin Faces, this is one of the two designs that led us toward the full kit line — both proved people liked painting loose pieces and skipping the stencil entirely.
Buying Your Board
The one thing worth getting right before you order.
Every kit is sold by the board it fits, not by its own dimensions. Buy the kit first, read the size it's built for, then buy lumber to match. A 4ft x 10" kit on a 6ft board leaves you with two feet of empty plank and no good way to fill it.
Common sizes across the line are 4ft x 10", 5ft x 10", 5ft x 12" and 6ft x 12". If you're unsure, the 4ft x 10" is the safest starting point — it fits most porches and it's the size every kit in the line offers.
One last thing: lean the finished board back a few degrees against the wall. A leaner set too upright will walk forward and eventually fall.
