Three Tips for Better-Looking Shelf Sitters

Offload, offload, offload. Whether you're stenciling a pattern or dry-brushing shading, the single biggest mistake is too much paint on the brush. Dab it off onto a paper towel until the brush looks almost dry, then build the color in thin layers. It takes one extra minute and saves you from bleeding and blotchy coverage.

Paint every piece before you glue. Lay the pieces out, paint them all flat, let them dry completely, and only then assemble. Trying to get a brush into a tight corner after gluing is a bad afternoon.

Work light to dark. Base coat in your lightest shade, then layer darker tones into the creases and edges. Finish with a few white highlights on the raised areas. This is the same technique that makes a painted sunflower or pumpkin look dimensional, and it works just as well on a Santa beard.

Start Now, Not December 20th

Unfinished wood kits are a relaxed evening project, not a race — but they do need dry time between coats. Starting in October or early November means your shelf sitters are finished and displayed before the busy part of the season hits, and you've got time to paint a second one as a gift.
